Which utility serves you?
Inside LP&L's area, your retail provider handles the bill (since 2024), but LP&L still delivers the power, handles outages and owns the meter. Wolfforth, Shallowater, Slaton and Idalou list Xcel Energy, and some rural areas are served by South Plains Electric Cooperative. Levelland and Ransom Canyon addresses vary. Check your bill. The utility matters for meter-base work, service upgrades and generator hookups.
Permits depend on where you live
Inside the city, the City of Lubbock issues electrical permits ($50 minimum on the FY 2023–24 fee schedule) and inspects the work. The towns run their own offices, and a few, like Slaton, require the licensed master electrician to apply in person. Ask every contractor who pulls the permit. The Lubbock electrical permits guide covers homeowner permits and landlord rules.
Texas requires electrical contractors and electricians to be licensed by TDLR (Occupations Code Ch. 1305). Check any license at tdlr.texas.gov/LicenseSearch and look for the contractor's TECL number on the truck and the written proposal.
